I’d like some answers please.

Why do people believe in God? We found ourselves asking this question late one night after a long day. The result of our conversation was surprising.

This question has been unanswered ever since the human race has been present on this earth, whether through creation or evolution. There are no completely understandable reasons why people believe the Old and New Testaments or any other religious texts. As Karl Marx said, “Religion is the opiate of the masses,” and it is a widespread belief that many people cling to organized religion and unorganized spirituality in a way to find meaning and purpose during the darkest times in their lives.  We can understand this desire for comfort and the feeling that there is a “higher power” that will guide our lives in the direction of good.

However, when inspected, it is equally understandable that people would generate these beliefs within their own minds, hoping for salvation when it does not actually exist. For example, in the Christian religion, the Old Testament itself, the basis of many beliefs, has many flaws and unanswered questions. How could anyone believe that God just decided to create heaven and earth, and then just add a tree that had “knowledge” of good and evil, but know nothing as to how far evil can extend?
